Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp handed Darwin Nunez advice as Sadio Mane makes classy gesture

Liverpool will be looking to record their first win of the season when they face Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The Reds already find themselves five points behind the pacesetters and will need a response when they play in front of their home fans for the first time at Anfield. Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score and assist last weekend and has been backed to start.

Jurgen Klopp now has plenty of options in attack which gives him a selection conundrum despite the departure of Sadio Mane - who showed his class with a touching gesture despite leaving for Germany this summer. These are the latest news lines from Anfield.

Nunez start called for

Klopp must learn from the dropped points at Fulham by unleashing Nunez from the outset as Liverpool host Crystal Palace on Monday night, according to Arsenal legend Paul Merson.

The Reds were held to a 2-2 draw on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, having to come from behind twice to salvage a result at Craven Cottage. Nunez, who moved to Anfield from Benfica in a transfer worth up to £85million in June, started the match on the bench and made the all-important impact after coming on in the second half.

"Darwin Nunez should've played from the start last week - he proved his mettle when he came on," the former England international told Sportskeeda. "Liverpool aren't playing against a dominant team in Crystal Palace - midfield isn't the biggest part of their game, but they can hurt you on the counter. I think Liverpool will win this game, but it'll be a hard-fought match."

Mane's gesture

Mane has made his affection for the Liverpool staff known as he sent packages to all the club's employees.

That covers some 150 people, whose roles range from security guards to the tea ladies. The Senegal star recently left Anfield after six seasons and joined Bayern Munich but has departed with a touching gesture. The packages each included a hand written card as well as chocolates and a portrait of Mane, according to Bild.

The forward enjoyed huge success during his time on Merseyside having joined from Southampton in the summer of 2016. Mane was Jurgen Klopp's first major signing and helped them win the Premier League and Champions League during his time, which saw him score 120 times.

Henderson's assessment

Jordan Henderson felt there were positives to take from last weekend's draw at Fulham despite their display being criticised. Liverpool twice had to come from behind to claim a point, but the skipper believes they got better as the game went on.

He said in his programme notes: “Our Premier League campaign didn’t start the way we’d hoped it would with last weekend’s draw at Fulham, but regardless of the outcome the season-opener was always going to be a game to take lessons from.

“Elements of our performance were OK, especially as the game wore on, and we could have won it in the end, but there are other areas that require either fine-tuning or outright improvement. Part of this is actually the way it should be in the first couple of weeks in August – at this stage, it’s all about striving for peak fitness, searching for rhythm and looking to find cohesion as a team."
