Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp gives honest view on Darwin Nunez and Arthur Melo transfers

Liverpool's Premier League campaign resumes on Saturday night when they welcome Jesse Marsch's Leeds to Merseyside.

The Reds recorded a fourth consecutive Champions League win against Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday night, but their domestic form isn't the best. A 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest last Saturday left Jurgen Klopp's side eighth in the Premier League.

Liverpool will be keen to avoid another slip up against Leeds, as they look to climb the table. They're 12 points behind leaders Arsenal and 10 behind champions Manchester City, who are the favourites for the title. Here are the latest headlines from Anfield.

Klopp backs "incredible" Nunez

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Darwin Nunez's "incredible" stats amid criticism of the striker since his £85million move from Benfica in the summer. Nunez, 23, has scored six goals in 13 games for Liverpool but was sent off against Crystal Palace on his home debut.

"Darwin came here after a short break in the summer, arriving in Asia, didn’t speak a word [of English] and then being young, Liverpool is a big club, it is a big step for him and he was expensive and all these kind of things," said Klopp in a press conference on Friday.

"Then all of a sudden, you play the first game and everybody is looking at you. It's like the whole place is dark and there is only one light and it's the spotlight on you.

"You have to deal with that - we all expect them to deal immediately with it, [to] be prepared, but it’s not like this. That's the start: trying to get fit step by step with new training - with new, different things in training - different demands and all these kind of things."

Klopp added: "His numbers are incredible to be absolutely honest. If you speak about xGs [expected goals], I am pretty sure his xGs are pretty high as well. He had a few chances which he missed, but he scored as well... [his] potential is incredible."

Arthur to stay on Merseyside

Klopp has confirmed Arthur Melo will remain at Liverpool for the rest of the term, despite having a "serious" injury. The Brazil international, 26, was signed from Juventus on a season-long loan in the summer, but the transfer has been a nightmare so far.

Arthur has played just 13 minutes of football for Klopp's side, coming on in the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Napoli last month. He also featured in an EFL Trophy game for the U23s against Rochdale but hasn't played since due to a thigh injury that requires surgery.

"It's a long-term injury," said Klopp, who told journalists Arthur's loan spell won't be cancelled. "When he's back then we will think about it again but in the moment it's too far away. I have no idea how long it will be but it will be long. It's a serious injury."

Klopp receives punishment

Klopp has avoided a touchline ban after being sent off in the closing stages of Liverpool's victory against City for yelling in an assistant referee's face over a challenge between Bernardo Silva and Mohamed Salah. Yet the FA have handed the German a £30,000 fine.

"I know what I said and from a further distance with a different face, it'd be fine [OK]," said Klopp when asked about his punishment. "The most expensive face in the world! A lot of money but it's invested in something good, which is fine. Never had a red before. I'm not happy or relieved, I was just waiting for the punishment."

The FA confirmed Klopp's fate on Thursday. "This sanction is subject to appeal by either Jurgen Klopp or The FA following receipt of the independent Regulatory Commission's written reasons," read the statement. His behaviour was described as "improper".
