Liverpool news: Gary Neville urges Jurgen Klopp to lose vs Bayern Munich to boost title push

Gary Neville has advised Liverpool to go out of the Champions League against Bayern Munich to benefit their Premier League title bid.

The Reds conceded the advantage in the title race to Manchester City with a goalless draw vs Everton on Sunday.

But Manchester United great Neville believes their best hope of beating off Pep Guardiola’s side to the title will be to exit Europe and have a “clean fixture list” to finish the season.

“Getting points on the board is a big advantage,” Neville said on his podcast. “I always thought that if Liverpool could win the league this season then they’d need a clean fixture list.

“I’m going to say it: go out against Bayern Munich. That sounds like madness.

“Of course, you’d never play to lose a game but it will be in Liverpool’s favour if they have a clean run as they can get everyone fresh.

“City have got a couple of FA Cup games, where Liverpool could go five or six points in front. That’s tough to pull back in the closing weeks. This title race is still 50-50.”

Mohamed Salah spurned a couple of glorious chances to snatch victory at Goodison Park, though Virgil van Dijk’s immense display meant the Reds were never likely to lose the game.

A one-point deficit should not spark panic, but Liverpool need three points at home to Burnley on Sunday before attempting to edge Bayern in Munich just three days later in the Champions League.
