Liverpool news: Darwin Nunez's "perfect" quality as ex-Reds ace set for Merseyside return

Liverpool are already two points behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race... and there are still 37 games to go!

Joking aside, it's been an indifferent weekend for Jurgen Klopp's team. They failed to beat Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon, with the game finishing 2-2. Yet new signing Darwin Nunez made a brilliant start to life in England, coming off the bench to score one and set another up. His first Premier League start is just around the corner.

Pep Guardiola's side, meanwhile, made a solid start to their campaign by beating West Ham 2-0 in London. Klopp won't be too concerned about results elsewhere just yet, but Liverpool must keep up with the pace. Here are the latest headlines from Anfield.

Fowler's guide to the Golden Boot

Mirror Football columnist and Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has given his thoughts on this season's race for the Premier League's Golden Boot.

On Nunez and Mohamed Salah, Fowler wrote: "I also reckon the little Egyptian will benefit from the arrival of Darwin Nunez. Sadio Mane was a fantastic player for Jurgen Klopp’s team, but Nunez will give the Reds another dimension in the way he leads the line, holds the ball up and brings a physicality to the team that hasn’t been there previously.

"He will also be expected to bag his share of goals - and his strike to seal the Community Shield was the finish of a player who will put his head where it hurts without a second thought. Salah, Nunez and Luis Diaz will form a formidable front-line - and Klopp also has Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota in his armoury."

Fowler added: "It is great to see the Premier League packed with players who are masters of the goalscorer’s art. Let the shoot-out commence."

Reina backs Nunez transfer

Liverpool legend Pepe Reina believes the departure of Sadio Mane and the arrival of Nunez is a good move for his former club. The Senegal international joined Bayern Munich in July and was replaced by Nunez, who Reina has backed to offer a different dimension.

"Darwin and Mane are two great players of a certain stature," he told The Sun. "Let’s find out what Darwin can bring to the squad with the help of his teammates, but this swap makes sense and it can be a great thing for the club.

"Liverpool have a great variety of players but they needed someone who can hold up the ball and play one-two passes. And thanks to Darwin they are perfect in attack."

Coady heading to Merseyside

Everton are close to tying up a deal to sign experienced centre-back Conor Coady as a solution to their defensive injury crisis. The 29-year-old came through the ranks at Liverpool but made just two appearances for the club before he was sold to Huddersfield.

Everton moved swiftly in the transfer market following the defeat by Chelsea, where Ben Godfrey suffered a broken leg and injury-troubled Yerry Mina limped out of the game.

Boss Frank Lampard has shown an interest in Wolves defender Coady - who was born Merseyside - but that intensified further when he realised he is likely to be without the two injured defenders for several months which has left him short on bodies at the back.

It is understood the deal could initially be on a loan basis, with an obligation to make it permanent under certain circumstances. Coady is the Wolves skipper and has been a mainstay of the team for the past seven years. He is also a regular with England.
