Liverpool new signing given start as Manchester United chance missed

Stefan Bajcetic made his first competitive start for Liverpool as the under-18s let victory slip at Burnley.

Bajcetic, a 16-year-old defender signed from Celta Vigo in December, was taking the latest step in his Reds career having made his debut from the bench in the 6-1 win at Leeds United earlier in the month.

Liverpool could have gone top of U18 Premier League North on goal difference from Manchester United - albeit having played two games more - with victory on Tuesday afternoon.

And they seemed on their way when Luke Chambers notched his first goal for the U18s seven minutes into the second half after good initial play by the lively Mateusz Musialowski.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's side had the better of the first half with Musialowski twice coming close and Bajcetic also testing Burnley goalkeeper Sam Waller.

The Reds sought to build on their opener with Melkamu Frauendorf, Max Woltman and James Norris having opportunities.

But Burnley's doggedness paid off 13 minutes from time when Liverpool's defence was caught out by a quick cross from Finlay Armstrong and the unmarked Will Couch slotted home at the far post.

Liverpool are next in U18 Premier League North action when they entertain Middlesbrough on Saturday (kick-off 12.30pm).

LIVERPOOL U18s: Mrozek, Wilson, Quansah, Koumetio, Jonas, Chambers, Bajcetic (Miles 76), Stephenson (Norris 65), Frauendorf, Musialowski, Woltman (Balagizi 71). Sub: Kelly.
