Liverpool 'need Philippe Coutinho' but transfer hangs in the balance

Liverpool need a player like Philippe Coutinho to unlock packed defences.

That's the opinion of former Reds boss Phil Thompson, who is an admirer of the Brazilian, although admits it is highly unlikely that Coutinho would ever return to Anfield.

Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018, putting pen to paper on a long-term deal after completing a dream £142million switch.

But after one season Coutinho was shipped out on loan to Bayern Munich, where he has failed to impress enough to earn a permanent move.

Liverpool have once again been linked with the 27-year-old, and even considered bringing him in on loan in the summer of 2019, before he joined the Bundesliga giants.

Thompson has spoken out on the positions he believes Liverpool need to strengthen, focusing on left-back and up front.

Aside from Andy Robertson, and the front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Liverpool are short of quality options in their respective positions.

Thompson added that while he doesn't believe Coutinho would ever rejoin Liverpool, that the Reds could also do with a player of his ilk.

"I still think we need another striker and maybe a little bit more back-up for Andy Robertson," Thompson told Sky Sports News.

"We're not too bad at centre-back, and I would like to think we are well-blessed in midfield.

"I don't think the Philippe Coutinho one would ever come off again, to get him back, but it's that sort of player that we actually need to unlock packed defences."
