Liverpool named as one of the most affordable cities to buy a home in the UK

Liverpool has been named as one of the most affordable cities to buy a house in the UK in 2021.

Halifax has revealed its list of the 20 cheapest places to purchase a home across the country - and Liverpool is ranked in 13th place with average prices estimated to be £215,741.

The position on the list is determined by the cities' average house price divided by the average annual earnings.

Average income in Liverpool is calculated to be £34,911 - which means the city's price to earnings ratio is 6.2.

This is below the national average for cities across the UK, estimated to be 8.5.

Halifax found house prices have surged across the country by 10.3% over the past year with the average property now costing 8.1 times average earnings.

The cheapest city to buy a home in the UK was named as Derry in Northern Ireland while Winchester was identified as the place with the most expensive prices.

Halifax's managing director stated the results show a trend that house prices are cheaper in the north of the country.

Russell Galley said: "Affordability is significantly better in the north and there are now just two cities - Plymouth and Portsmouth - with better than average affordability in the south."
