Liverpool must pay out £100,000 after Kaide Gordon handed first team debut

Liverpool will have to pay Derby County £100,000, after 16-year-old Kaide Gordon was handed his first start against Norwich in the Carabao Cup.

The teenager joined the club from Derby County in February 2021 for an initial £1m fee, rising to a potential £3m, depending on various bonuses.

Having been a breakout star of Liverpool ’s pre-season campaign, Gordon has placed himself on the periphery of the first team picture, despite only making his U23’s debut earlier this season.

Jurgen Klopp has named a much-changed team for his side’s trip to Carrow Road, with Conor Bradley also handed his debut, and Gordon being in the starting line-up means he has earned his former club an additional £100k, according to the Telegraph .

The clash influx comes at an ideal time for Derby, with the Championship club having entered into administration last week.

However, despite his age, making his Liverpool debut won't be Gordon’s first taste of senior football, having made his first team debut for the Rams in December 2020.

Klopp’s assistant coach Pep Lijnders spoke to the press ahead of the cup tie and was full of praise for the young winger.

He said: "In the summer I went to the under-23s training ground and I saw one player who has fire in each moment,” detailing what convinced the coaching team to include Gordon in the pre-season training camp.

"I call Jurgen and I'm like 'wow we have a new player here'."

Caoimhin Kelleher and Curtis Jones have also been handed their first starts at the season, with Joe Gomez wearing the captain’s armband, as only Kostas Tsimikas and Ibrahima Konate retain their spots from the weekend’s win over Crystal Palace.
