Liverpool museums 'most visited outside London' after record year

Liverpool has no shortage of stunning attractions which charm tourists and locals alike, particularly its museums and art galleries.

It has been revealed that Liverpool’s World Museum was England’s most visited museum outside of London in 2018 in its busiest year ever.

Last year, the museum welcomed more than 610,000 visitors to the China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors exhibition alone, making it one of the best attended exhibitions in the UK.

Liverpool welcomed a whole host of wonderful exhibitions last year, including Double Fantasy: John & Yoko and Slaves of Fashion: New Works by The Singh Twins to the Museum of Liverpool and The Walker Art Gallery respectively.

Double Fantasy, a world-first exhibition, has proven so popular it has been extended until November 3, 2019.

Museum of Liverpool soared to success this year, becoming England’s third most visited museum outside of London in 2018, while The Merseyside Maritime Museum came in fourth.

The Walker Art Gallery also had its most successful year since 2008 last year, thanks to its continuation of a diverse and exciting exhibitions.

Liverpool’s museums are some of the many wonders to be found in the city, and their exhibitions throughout the years have only made the city more fascinating.

Every two years, Liverpool boasts stunning artworks and exhibits from the Liverpool Biennial, becoming transfixed with the contemporary work.

From 2015 to 2017, the city was captivated by the Museum of Liverpool’s ‘Growing up in the City: in photographs’, which showcased a collection of snapshots of Liverpool children’s experiences of growing up over time.

While, art enthusiasts were mesmerised by The Walker Art Gallery’s ‘Good Time George’ by Maggi Hambling in 2017.

2018, however, was a revolutionary year for Liverpool Museums, as the China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors exhibition boosted the local economy by more than £83 million and World Museum saw a 111% increase on 2017.

Laura Pye, Director of National Museums Liverpool said: “The museums and galleries of National Museums Liverpool are bursting with brilliant objects, incredible stories and memorable moments, and in 2018 we were able to take it to another level with a really vibrant program, including some exceptional exhibitions.

“We hope to build on this success for 2019 and in the years to come.

“We have just opened ‘Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style’ at the Walker Art Gallery, which has already welcomed more than 5,000 people, and proving to be another ‘must-see’ exhibition.”

Association of Leading Visitor Attractions revealed that of England’s top four museums outside of London, three are in Liverpool.
