Jurgen Klopp hints at Xherdan Shaqiri exit
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has dropped a huge hint over the future of midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri after he was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup defeat by Arsenal last night.
Klopp’s side were beaten 5-4 on penalties by the Gunners after a 0-0 draw at Anfield . And despite making a host of changes from the Premier League win over Mikel Arteta’s team earlier this week, Klopp did not have space for Shaqiri.
The Switzerland international scored in the Reds’ 7-2 win at Lincoln City in the previous round, but Klopp hinted in his post-match interview that the former Stoke City winger could now leave.
“I can't and I don't want to say anything about that,” he said. “What I can say is he is not injured and it is not for disciplinary reasons.
“It is a time of the year when a manager gets some information then I have to react on that."
Shaqiri is reportedly a target for two clubs ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, with Liverpool set to demand in the region of £10million for the 28-year old.
Klopp reveals his comment to Bernd Leno after Arsenal penalty shootout defeat
Klopp shared a joke with German counterpart Bernd Leno at full-time of Thursday’s game, after the Arsenal shot-stopped played a key part in his team’s triumph.
Leno made a host of saves in normal time to frustrate the hosts before saving spot-kicks from Harry Wilson and Divock Origi, and Klopp spoke to the former Bayer Leverkusen man at full-time .
“I told him after the game, I was not too happy about that!” he said. “We had really good moments – as a manager I wish that we scored but I want to see us create.
“Yes, the boys can play better but I am not sure they can play better after two days' training against a changed Arsenal team.”
“They did their analysis as well and didn't give us the space like the last game. You have to learn from the game and I thought the boys did really well.”
Klopp praises Harry Wilson following crucial penalty miss
Jurgen Klopp refused to criticise Harry Wilson after the youngster missed the vital spot-kick in the defeat by Arsenal.
Wilson was one of nine changes to the starting line-up from Liverpool’s Premier League win over the Gunners earlier this week.
However, despite seeing his effort saved by Gunners keeper Bernd Leno, Klopp was full of praise for the 23-year old at full-time .
“Harry Wilson, my God, he played in centre-mid and defended well. I like a lot of parts of the game, but we lost in the end and that's the part I don't like.
“It is not too easy in a squad like this but they learn and want to learn and they are able to perform in a tricky game today.
“It was tricky not only because they were young but because their manager sends them on to the pitch in a team which doesn't usually play together.”
