Liverpool morning headlines as Steven Gerrard explains title absence and transfer creativity needed

Here are the Liverpool morning morning headlines for Monday, August 3.

Klopp must be creative to solve summer transfer task

Liverpool are not expected to be heavy spenders in the current transfer window.

The same happened last year and the Reds romped to their first league title in 30 years, so a quiet summer does not automatically spell disaster for the season ahead.

However, there is one area of the squad which is short, as there is no specialised cover for Andy Robertson at left-back.

The ECHO has taken a look at four realistic options for the role, including players currently with the club and possible realistic transfer targets.

That’s all here

Gerrard explains why he missed the title party

As everyone now knows, the Liverpool squad watched Manchester City’s crucial Premier League match with Chelsea together at Formby Hall Golf Resort, and partied long into the night once the result had gone their way and the top flight crown secured.

One man who could have been there but wasn’t was former captain Steven Gerrard.

Speaking in a new documentary about Jurgen Klopp, which is on Channel 4 at 10pm tonight, Gerrard explained why he didn’t attend the gathering.

"I was at home watching it on TV...I was invited to go and be around the players, be with them, but I thought the right thing to do was be at home with my family, and let the players celebrate and enjoy themselves,” he said.

"The scenes were absolutely fantastic. There was no happier house in Formby than my house let me tell you.”

Liverpool must copy rivals after ending lengthy wait

After Liverpool had secured their 11th title in 18 seasons back in 1990, nobody would’ve thought it would take the club three years to win another, never mind 30.

Yet here we are.

The Reds are far from alone in having a lengthy title drought though. Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all won their first titles in the Premier League era after waiting between 26 and 50 years since their last First Division crowns.

They all immediately went on to win more in the seasons which followed too, and Liverpool will hope to copy them in the next few years.

But how do they go about maintaining that dominance? We take a look here.
