Liverpool morning headlines as Roberto Firmino gives Jurgen Klopp transfer dilemma

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Tuesday, 15 September.

Firmino needs competition - Aldridge

Liverpool legend John Aldridge believes Roberto Firmino would benefit from added competition in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Firmino failed to find the net in Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Leeds United on Saturday, with fellow forward Mohamed Salah stealing the headlines with a hat-trick.

Firmino is coming off the back of his lowest goal haul in English football having scored only nine goals during the Reds’ run to the title, and Aldridge thinks the Brazilian has given the club a transfer dilemma.

“There's been a lot said about Liverpool 's stance in the transfer market this summer but I can't help but feel it might do Bobby some good if he did have someone breathing down his neck for his place so he knows he's got to score goals,” Aldridge wrote for the ECHO .

“Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of his and he does some great things for the front three which often goes unnoticed but if you're a number nine, you have to score goals.

“That's the bottom line and he knows that. He's not been doing that at Anfield for the last year or so and it needs to change.”

Werner wouldn’t make Klopp’s XI - Carragher

Jamie Carragher has said that new Chelsea striker Timo Werner would not make it into Liverpool’s starting line-up.

Werner joined the Blues from RB Leipzig having previously been linked with a move to Anfield.

And while former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Werner could turn out to be the one that got away for Jurgen Klopp, he does not think the German has reached the level of the Reds’ front three.

Blood Red: Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s defensive performance in Leeds United win

"Right now, he wouldn’t get in the Liverpool front three, Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

"Watching him for Leipzig, you think about how much he loves that left channel.

"For Liverpool, you think of the greatest striker in the Premier League in Thierry Henry - who used to favour that left-hand side.

"He can play left of the front three, but predominantly, he will be the central striker."

Klopp facing two selection issues ahead of Chelsea

Klopp faces a selection dilemma with three of his players ahead of next week’s clash against Chelsea.

Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge to face the Blues on Sunday with Frank Lampard’s men having also picked up three points from their opening game of the season.

And Klopp may consider dropping Firmino in favour of Takumi Minamino.

Writing for the ECHO , Conor Dunn explained that Firmino’s unconvincing display against Leeds coupled with Minamino’s impressive pre-season form may force Klopp into a difficult decision.

Joe Gomez is also in danger of losing his starting berth with Joel Matip having returned to fitness, while Klopp may opt for Fabinho in midfield with Jordan Henderson lacking match fitness.
