Liverpool morning headlines as key Premier League vote set to take place

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, May 18.

Midfielder poised to turn down new deal

Pedro Chirivella is one of Liverpool’s longest serving players, having joined from Valencia in 2013. However, he has also been out on loan to three different clubs in that time, and has only made 11 appearances for the Reds.

With his contract coming to an end this summer, and despite his lack of game time, Liverpool would like him to stay. The Spaniard has been offered a new five-year deal by the club.

While his decision has not yet been confirmed, it appears likely Chirivella will leave in pursuit of regular football, with Rangers and Nantes said to be interested in signing the 22-year old.

On loan forward stars in Bundesliga

Another young Liverpool player who has yet to make a serious impression at the club is Taiwo Awoniyi. He signed for the Reds in 2015, but has spent the intervening years on various loans in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, and has yet to make an appearance for Liverpool’s first team.

The Nigeria Under-23 international has spent this season with Jurgen Klopp’s former side Mainz, and yesterday Awoniyi came off the bench to score his first goal for the club.

It helped them to recover from 2-0 down at FC Koln to earn a 2-2 draw. With Mainz only four points above the Bundesliga relegation zone, it could prove vital in their battle to remain in the top division.

Key Premier League vote to take place today

Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore will join representatives from the other 19 Premier League clubs on a video conference call this morning, as they look to finalise plans on how to complete the 2019/20 season.

A vote will be held on whether to return to training this week, with 14 of the 20 clubs needing to vote in favour for it to be passed. If so, full squads are expected to resume training with their clubs  in socially distanced small groups either tomorrow or Wednesday.

Other discussions regarding Project Restart will be held today too, with agreement over issues such as neutral venues and when matches can resume yet to be reached.
