Liverpool morning headlines as Jurgen Klopp speaks on Thiago Alcantara speculation

Here are the Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, July 6.

Klopp addresses Thiago speculation

Premier League champions Liverpool bounced back from their midweek defeat at Manchester City by beating Aston Villa 2-0 at Anfield yesterday.

Following the win, Jurgen Klopp was asked to comment on recent transfer gossip. Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, with some reports even claiming personal terms had been agreed.

The ECHO understands the club is not planning to make a move at present, and Klopp had no interest in discussing the rumours either.

“Would you be surprised if I don’t give an answer on that, just because I never answer these kind of questions,” he said.

Lineker takes aim

With yesterday’s match the first at Anfield since Liverpool were confirmed as league winners for 2019/20, it saw the debut of a fantastic new banner.

‘LIVERPOOL FC – CHAMPIONS AGAIN’ is the simple message it contains, highlighting that the Reds have picked up their 19th league title.

And Gary Lineker gave short shrift to anyone who only wishes to acknowledge the modern era by tweeting: “Again? Are they not aware that football didn’t exist before the Premier League?”

Klopp in favour of drinks break

In an effort to prevent injuries and take health precautions, Premier League matches are featuring drinks breaks midway through each half.

It seemed to work well for Liverpool yesterday, as Sadio Mane broke the deadlock for the Reds shortly after the pause in the second half.

And Klopp is a fan, having said he has “wished for this for 20 years.”

It offers the manager a good opportunity for some brief in-game coaching.

“You have not a lot of time to talk to the players. But you can give one or two bits of information,” he said.
