Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, 21 September.
Klopp maintains integrity in key win
In his post-match press conference following Sunday’s 2-0 win over Chelsea, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted to reprimanding a member of his backroom staff mid-game.
Klopp was heard rebuking someone on the Liverpool bench who celebrated the decision to send Andreas Christensen for an early bath on the stroke of half-time.
He has insisted it was not a member of the playing squad, but refused to comment on the identity of the individual who was on the receiving end of his momentary anger.
Klopp emphasised the collective need to retain their integrity and candour during high-profile fixtures, something which one staff member was hastily reminded of at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the German manager’s reaction, Klopp asserted that there was no deeper issue and that no further action would be taken.
Liverpool forward “one of the best in the world” according to Carragher
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has lauded Senegalese forward Sadio Mané as one of the finest players to have pulled on the Liverpool shirt.
The Sky Sports pundit, who made 737 appearances for Liverpool during his career, labelled Mané as “certainly one of the top left-sided attackers in world football” following the 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Mané scored both goals against Frank Lampard’s Blues, the first being the pick of the bunch, capping a finely-worked move which involved each member of Liverpool’s front three, with a well-taken header.
“He’s been the one constant from day one. He’s a superstar,” Carragher said, referring to Mané as the first world-class player to have been signed on Klopp’s watch.
In 173 appearances for the club, 28-year-old Mané has scored 83 times for Liverpool across all competitions.
Klopp praises an impressive 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge
Klopp has shown his admiration for his side’s 2-0 win over Chelsea, calling their performance “ a perfect day .”
Despite being held at half-time by Chelsea, Klopp was not worried about his team’s inability to score. The German admitted he was readying himself for a positive team talk, even before Christensen’s red card just before the break.
Klopp also heaped praise on new signing Thiago Alcântara who was a half-time substitute for the Reds. He was pleased with the Spaniard’s passing display in particular, even though he did concede a penalty.
Spot-kick hero Alisson also came in for acclaim from the manager, diving low to save Jorginho’s shot from 12 yards.
“Clean sheet, Ali saved a penalty, Thiago debut and if Hendo has absolutely nothing [wrong] it is a perfect day,” Klopp boasted.
