Liverpool morning headlines as Championship club set to sign winger

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, 7 September.

Championship clubs interested in Sheyi Ojo

Sheyi Ojo is set to sign for Championship side Cardiff City on loan.

The 23-year-old academy graduate hasn’t appeared for Liverpool since January 2017 and has spent recent seasons on loan away from Anfield.

He played under Steven Gerrard at Rangers last season, and Ligue 1 side Reims the year before that. This is set to be his first stint back in the English second tier since turning out for Fulham in the 2017/18 season.

Nottingham Forest are also said to be interested in taking him on for the 2020/21 campaign, but it’s Neil Harris’ Bluebirds that are expected to secure his services, the ECHO understands.

Here’s that story in full.

Roberto Firmino serves reminder of quality in Blackpool friendly

There’s been a clamour in some quarters for Liverpool to bolster their attacking options, but Roberto Firmino offered a reminder of his unique qualities in the 7-2 friendly win over Blackpool.

Mark Wakefield writes that the Reds would struggle to find another forward to offer the same qualities in terms of energy and all-round link-up as the Brazilian, who has been a key player throughout Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

Firmino played all 90 minutes of Liverpool’s 7-2 thrashing of Blackpool on Saturday afternoon and looked the liveliest of their attackers, in spite of scoring a fraction of the goals Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane did last season.

Individual highlights included a brilliant backheel goal and an excellent assister for Takumi Minamino, having worked hard to win the ball in the build-up.

Every reason to prioritise Carabao Cup for Reds

The Carabao Cup offers Liverpool a big opportunity to lift more silverware this season, writes the ECHO’s chief Liverpool writer Ian Doyle.

Jurgen Klopp has won the biggest two trophies available in the Premier League and Champions League, but will be looking to add to the club’s honours list in 2020/21.

This season’s edition is a streamlined version, with one-legged semi-finals for the first time, and Liverpool ought to back themselves to make it to the fourth round after being drawn against either Bradford City or Lincoln City in two weeks time.

Manchester City have won five of the last seven, including a penalties victory over Klopp’s Reds back in 2016.
