Liverpool morning headlines as Andy Robertson opens up on title celebrations

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Wednesday, 16 September.

Robertson reveals Chelsea shirt reaction

Andy Robertson has revealed how he jokingly toyed with wearing a Chelsea shirt on the night Liverpool sealed the Premier League title.

The Liverpool players, along with manager Jurgen Klopp, gathered together on June 25 to watch Chelsea take on Manchester City, knowing that they would be confirmed as champions if City dropped points at Stamford Bridge.

And Robertson, writing in his new book, has explained how a series of responses on WhatsApp perhaps forced him into thinking twice about wearing a Chelsea top.

“As the rest of the lads were getting ready for a barbecue that we all hoped would turn into a title winners party, I went into my wardrobe and pulled out the shirt that Billy Gilmour had given me a few months earlier,” wrote Robertson.

“Putting it on, it felt a bit snug but I was going for the colour, not the fit. A quick selfie followed and I posted the picture on our group chat straight away.

“Lads, what’s the dress code for tonight?’ I asked and a series of uncomplimentary responses and emojis sent my phone into overdrive. ‘Shorts and t-shirt it is then,' I thought.

“Not that I’d been serious anyway. I just wanted to give the lads the chance to have a pop but there was no doubt that for one night and one night only, everyone of a Liverpool persuasion would be supporting Chelsea. All they needed was a draw and we would be champions.”

Keita change opens up new opportunities in Reds midfield

Naby Keita’s inclusion on the right of Klopp’s midfield three has added a new dimension to the Liverpool midfield.

The Guinean slotted into that role for Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 win over Leeds United on Saturday, which may give Klopp food for thought moving forward.

"It is good news that Liverpool can play Naby Keita on the right-hand side, and Wijnaldum on the left, ahead of a defensive midfielder,” said journalist Steve Dawson on the Post-Game Podcast .

“More often, we have seen Keita on the left but what we are seeing now is a situation where Keita can play two positions, Wijnaldum can play two, and Henderson can play defensive or a little bit further forward on the right.

"And Jones is up there as well now. That means Liverpool are much more able to rotate in midfield than if Keita was just playing solely on the left.

"That can be a very big thing for Liverpool going forward, particularly as Fabinho gets back up to speed and slots into that number six position.”

Reds fans ‘crying out for’ Thiago deal

Signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich is the one piece of transfer business Liverpool fans are ‘crying out for’.

That is the view of Liverpool supporter and writer Hannah Pinnock, who featured on this week’s A View from the Kop.

Thiago has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield having helped Bayern win last season’s Champions League.

“If a replacement would need to be signed,” said Pinnock.

“Especially with Naby and Ox’s injury records. The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Loris Karius, Marko Gruijc and Harry Wilson could all still be sold.

“Ideally, is the one bit of business Liverpool fans are crying out for, especially at the price being talked about. I can’t see how we wait until January or beyond if we want him; Bayern want to sell and if we don’t make an offer, another team will.”
