Liverpool morning digest as Gary Lineker backs Premier League change and Jadon Sancho hopes end

Here are your Liverpool headlines for Tuesday, March 31.

Lineker backs Premier League extension

Gary Lineker has backed the Premier League to do “the fairest thing” possible and extend the domestic season when it is deemed safe enough to do so.

Liverpool are currently 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League, and if the season was completely abolished, it would mean their best chance of ending a 30-year wait for a top-flight title would be over.

However, the former Everton striker has backed the Premier League to continue whenever they can, and believes it is the best outcome for everyone involved.

“I think ideally we’d like to finish the season, I think that would make sense,” Lineker said to talkSPORT.

“But this whole situation is so fluid and much more importantly than anything, it’s difficult to know when it’s going to go away.

“We could be able to play again by June, it might have calmed down enough, whether that will be behind closed doors, which is not really what football’s about, but it would help to finish the leagues.

“That’s the thing everybody would want to happen, except perhaps some supporters who really don’t like Liverpool.”

Reds’ pre-season plans scrapped

According to David Lynch of the Evening Standard, Liverpool have been forced to scrap their pre-season plans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The past two pre-seasons has saw Jurgen Klopp take his team over to the United States to face other European giants to try and raise the popularity of the club in America.

However, for the upcoming pre-season, the Reds planned to stay in Europe, with the European Championships and Copa America meaning some of their “big names” would not be available for the majority of the tour.

The Evening Standard report that Liverpool were planning on playing games in Scandinavia as part of their pre-season tour.

However, with the worldwide coronavirus pandemic still very much a threat, it seems the Reds won’t be having much, if any, of a pre-season tour in the summer.

Liverpool priced out of Sancho move

The Express have reported that Fenway Sports Group believe the price being quoted for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho is too expensive.

Dortmund are reportedly asking for £120m for Sancho, something that the Liverpool owner thinks is too expensive.

Sancho, who has been in scintillating form for Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season, has also been linked with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Irish Independent have also reported that the 20-year-old has already unofficially confirmed that he will move to Manchester United this summer.

Sancho left United’s rivals Manchester City in the summer of 2017 for just £8m to move to Germany.
