Liverpool might have found their next Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane after £40m transfer claim

As the European Championship's reach the halfway stage of the competition, for many, one eye begins to wander back to club football and the formalities of the off-season transfer window.

For a club like Liverpool this normally entails being linked with many players through the process of rumours and gossips columns.

And the start of this week was no different with Portuguese outlet A Bola becoming the latest to declare that Liverpool have an interest in an up and coming star, as they reported the Reds are in 'advanced talks' with the 26-year-old FC Porto winger Otavio.

With Michael Edwards renowned for operating in his shrewd manner of unearthing bargains across the continent, see Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as examples, who is the Brazilian wide man that Liverpool have been linked with?

So, who is Otavio?

To limit Otavio to one position seems rather unfair given the whereabouts of his minutes for Porto, came here there and everywhere.

The Brazilian primarily operated as a left midfielder, racking up 18 of his 42 appearances cutting inside onto his favoured right foot in Sérgio Conceição's favoured 4-4-2 system.

Making him a perfect fit for Klopp's favoured 4-3-3 model, as we've seen during his tenure how important the use of his inside-forwards is.

Having said that, Otavio was also deployed on the opposite flank, in centre-midfield, attacking midfielder and just off the striker in a variety of systems that Porto deployed last season. Again, ticking another huge box on the checklist of Klopp and Edwards.

But how does he compare to his potential new teammates?

Well, as it would be unfair to compare him to two world-class forwards, the ECHO has instead decided to draw comparisons and differences to Mane and Salah's metrics during the pairs last domestic season at Roma and Southampton, respectively.

Utilised in an identical inside-forward position during his final season at Roma, it is no surprise to see Salah lead the way in terms of goal scored as he found the net 12 more times than Otavio, who finished the domestic campaign with just three goals to his name.

Mane, who has become increasingly more clinical during his time at Anfield, boasted 11 goals during his final campaign at Southampton.

For assists, it's no surprise to see Salah lead the way out of the trio. But Otavio did produce near-similar assists per-90 metric (0.34) compared to Salah's (0.40), both leading the way ahead of Mane's relatively low score of (0.21).

Domestically, Otavio averaged a goal or assist contribution just over every 180 minutes. A metric that could provide Klopp with some encouragement taking into account the versatility of the Brazilian and his ability to play centrally, especially given how reliant Liverpool are on their stars at the top end of the pitch.

After all, it wouldn't be the first time Klopp has taken an attacking midfielder/wide forward and established them as a centre-midfielder, see Liverpool's departing No.5 Gini Wijnaldum as a suitable example.

For comparison, Wijnaldum (0.06), Jordan Henderson (0.11) and Thiago Alcantara (0.05) all contributed very little in terms of goals and assists from midfield.

However, given that it isn't their job Klopp instructs any given trio in midfield to do, it would extremely harsh to compare.

Especially when given the platform the trio provide the full-backs with, which is, in fact, Liverpool's main supply line.

Away from the pitch, Otavio fits Liverpool's player profile. At 26-years-old, with five seasons of high-level football under his belt, including Champions League, he seems to have the raw skill-set that Klopp loves to fine-tune.

With a release clause of €40m reportedly expiring on the 30th of June, he could represent a fine piece of business if Edwards was to activate the clause in his contract, given that it is unlikely that anyway could come in and dislodge the famous front-three that recently become a quartet.

As Liverpool will reportedly look to offload the likes of Divock Origi and Harry Wilson this summer, if they can raise the majority of Otavio's fee through outgoings then it would surely be hailed as another masterstroke by Edwards and his team.
