Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for coronavirus.

Shaqiri is the third Red to have returned a positive test result for the disease, though the news was announced while the midfielder was with the Switzerland squad.

New Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane were both revealed to have contracted the virus over the last week.

The Swiss FA announced Shaqiri’s positive test result on Tuesday, releasing a statement that read: “Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for Covid-19.

“In line with guidance from health authorities he is now in isolation.”

Switzerland are due to play Croatia in a friendly on Wednesday evening before an away fixture against Spain in Group A4 of the Nations League on Saturday.

They then take on Germany on Tuesday 13 October in the Uefa competition.

Shaqiri was linked with a move away from Premier League champions Liverpool late in the summer transfer window, which closed on Monday evening without the 28-year-old securing a transfer from the Anfield club.
