Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara tests positive for COVID-19

New Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara is in self-isolation after testing positive for coronavirus.

Thiago has shown minor symptoms of the virus and a club statement said the midfielder is “in good health but is getting better”.

The 29-year-old was pictured training at Melwood on Friday but prompted speculation over his fitness after being absent from subsequent sessions over the weekend.

The Spain international then missed Monday’s 3-1 Premier League win over Arsenal at Anfield, but was well enough to tweet a good luck message shortly before the match.

Liverpool have followed necessary protocols with Thiago having started a 10-day period of isolation with his family doing similar for 14 days.

The club's first team doctor, Dr Jim Moxon, said: “It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a COVID-19 test.

“We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is okay. He will be self-isolating now as per the guidelines and hopefully he’ll be back with us soon.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had already stated Thiago would be absent until after the international break, meaning he misses Thursday’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie at home to Arsenal and Sunday’s Premier League visit to Aston Villa.

Thiago moved to Anfield earlier this month after completing a transfer from Bayern Munich for an initial fee of £20million.
