Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita embroiled in Guinea political situation as FIFA release statement

Liverpool star Naby Keita has been caught up in the recent volatile political situation in his native homeland Guinea.

The Reds midfielder was called up for his country to play in their World Cup qualifiers this month.

Guinea were due to play Morocco on Monday, but the game has been postponed due to the current political situation.

Various reports have stated that an attempted coup of the country's government has taken place, although the BBC states that it was thwarted by the presidential guard.

However, contrasting reports in Guinea have stated that soldiers had dissolved the West African nation’s government, after soldiers appeared on television.

There was even a suggestion that Guinea’s borders could have been closed, but that is yet to be confirmed.

Regardless, both FIFA and CAF (Confederation of African Football) have decided to call off the game between Guinea and Morocco on Monday.

"The current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF,” wrote FIFA, in a statement.

“To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying match Guinea vs. Morocco, which had [been] scheduled to be hosted in Conakry, Guinea, on Monday 6 September.

“Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date.”

As they say in the statement, FIFA are yet to confirm a new date for Guinea’s game against Morocco, which Keita would almost certainly have had a role to play.

The Liverpool midfielder has already featured for his country during this international break, providing an assist in Guinea’s 1-1 draw with Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.
