Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic returns to Hertha Berlin on season-long loan deal

Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Marko Grujic will join Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old will spend a second consecutive campaign in the German capital, where he scored five goals in 23 appearances last term.

A desire to build on that form in a familiar environment saw Grujic turn down similar offers from both Frankfurt and Werder Bremen this summer.

Brighton and Atalanta also showed interest in the Serbian, but acted too late to stand a chance of securing his services.

The Reds will pocket a £2m loan fee over the course of the season, with a further £500,000 in potential bonuses also agreed between the clubs.

Hertha will cover Grujic’s wages in full during his time at the Olympiastadion, and are liable to pay penalties should they fail to guarantee him regular game time.

The former Red Star Belgrade starlet will now hope to prove himself worthy of earning a place in Jurgen Klopp’s plans for 2020-21 during his second stint at Hertha.

Transfer news and rumours for Monday, 1st July

Grujic has made just 14 appearances for Liverpool since becoming Klopp’s first Anfield signing in January 2016.

But his consistently impressive showings during loan stints in the Bundesliga and the Championship with Cardiff have caught the eye of his manager.
