Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum opens up on Barcelona interest

Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum has addressed speculation over summer interest from Barcelona.

The transfer window closed last night meaning the Dutchman will now remain with the Reds until January at the earliest.

Rumours swirled over the last few months that Barca could target Wijnaldum as a priority under new manager Ronald Koeman.

There was even some talk the 29-year-old's future could be tied to that of Thiago, who signed for Liverpool from Bayern Munich.

Wijnaldum has now given his take on where things stand.

Speaking at a press conference on international duty today, he said: "I don’t think [the Barcelona interest] was that serious, otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened.

"There was nothing concrete. I didn’t have to think about it.

"I will stay on [with Liverpool] it looks like now. My contract will run for another 10 months.

"It could still change, of course you never know that in football. So we'll see."

Wijnaldum's current deal at Anfield expires at the end of the season.

Last month, Klopp was asked about the future of his midfield man.

He said: “It’s all good with Gini. Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved. I can’t speak about a few years, but it’s all good for the moment.

“You know the situation – between me, Gini and the club, everything is fine.

“Since Gini is here I have had 500 or 600 talks with him. Of course I’ve spoken to him since he came back from international duty. But that’s all.”
