Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum doubtful for Club World Cup trip with muscle injury

Georginio Wijnaldum is a major doubt for Liverpool’s trip to Qatar for the Club World Cup after sustaining a muscle injury.

The midfielder was forced off in the second half of the Reds’ nervy 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday, and was seen clutching the back of his thigh as he left the field.

Any prolonged absence for the Dutchman would be particularly poorly timed for Jurgen Klopp’s team, who are already without the influential Fabinho due to injury.

Speaking after the game, the manager revealed that the severity of the problem remains unclear at this early stage.

But, with Liverpool scheduled to fly out to the Middle East on Sunday, Wijnaldum’s chances of involvement appear slim.

Klopp said: “It's a muscle problem. I don't know. He could probably fly to Qatar, my problem is I don't know what injury it is.

"You never want a muscle injury for a player but at this moment it's more difficult. All teams have the same problems.

"Tomorrow we will know more."
