Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson brands 10pm curfew 'madness' on Good Morning Britain

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson appeared on Good Morning Britain today to claim that the local lockdown in Liverpool wasn't working.

Mayor Anderson appeared on the show and chatted to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.

Liverpool is currently recording the second highest number of coronavirus cases the country, with the city currently recording 515 per 100,000 people.

When asked what was missing currently he said: “Collaboration, communication, conversation with local leaders.

"When we’re talking about the letters that Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester have written to the Health Secretary and it’s because we’re all in different places and different positions.

"We’re seeing 2,500 new cases in the past week in Liverpool and yet we’re seeing restrictions that were placed on Manchester and Newcastle not working and the increase in infection rate going up.

"So it’s about common sense, it’s about getting the balance right, it’s about what you can do, what you should do. And how local lockdowns work, working with local leaders to get it right. There is a lack of consistency, a lack of clarity."

Mayor Anderson said the 10pm curfew on pubs and restaurants was "madness" and having the wrong effect.

He said: "We see the local 10 o’clock curfew in pubs that is just madness to me because of what it’s doing, it is having the wrong effect.

"It’s driving people into houses to have parties, it’s making everybody come out onto the streets at the same time.

"And yet working together, these pubs and restaurants are Covid safe, they’ve made lots of investments.

"So it should be down to local authorities to work with those businesses and those restaurants to make it work. We need powers."
