Liverpool may be gearing up to repeat successful transfer trick again in summer

Liverpool have thrived on being unpredictable both on and off the pitch, which has made them a force to be reckoned with for the past few years.

In terms of transfers, the idea that anyone can predict what the club’s next move will be is overly optimistic, but there is one trend that we may be able to prophesise.

Part of the success has been Liverpool’s ability to find gems from teams who some of Europe’s top clubs may not necessarily go for straight away.

Finding bargains, diamonds among the rough even, has been a cornerstone of the success built by Michael Edwards and co at Anfield.

Has another potential star been unearthed? Well if you believe the rumours that that could well be the case.

Sheffield United’s Sander Berge is being linked with a move to Liverpool, and not for the first time.

This was the case during his time at Genk, shortly before he made the switch to Bramall Lane.

According to Eurosport, Liverpool are looking to strengthen their midfield options this summer, and have identified Berge as a possible option.

Given that Gini Wijnaldum is becoming more and more likely to depart on a free transfer this summer, you would not think it out of the question that a new midfielder is on Jurgen Klopp’s transfer shopping list this summer.

Whether Berge fits into that strategy remains to be seen, of course.

He is a player with undoubted talent and seems destined to be playing at a higher level than the Championship next season.

We have already seen that signing players from clubs who have just been relegated is not an unknown tactic from the Anfield hierarchy. Xherdan Shaqiri, Andy Robertson, as well as Wijnaldum, have all made impacts after being signed from teams who had just dropped down to the Championship.

Given that any midfielder signed is likely to have the tag of ‘Wijnaldum’s replacement’ labelled on them the minute they arrive on Merseyside, bringing in a player who can hit the ground running is essential.

Again, does this mean that Berge is the right fit? Not necessarily, but he does have the added advantage of playing in the top tier of English football for more than 12 months now. That is a valuable commodity when it comes to recruiting new talent who may have to adapt to the intensity of the league, as well as the style that Klopp employs at Anfield.

Liverpool may or may not be interested in Berge, only time will tell whether or not the rumours prove to have any truth to them.

What is important is that should the interest turn out to be genuine, it would continue a long running transfer strategy that has worked so well for Liverpool in the past, and there are no reasons to think it won’t do so again.
