Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on the shock phone call from Man City boss Pep Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola spoke to Jurgen Klopp on the phone after Liverpool won the Champions League.

Klopp explained that his Premier League rival was speaking to Lee Nobes, the head physio Liverpool recruited from City in November, when he passed the phone across.

The two managers spoke about the sensational season that had just taken place with the Reds claiming the European Cup and City winning the domestic treble after being pushed for the league title all the way by Liverpool.

The German said there was simply "a lot of respect" between the pair and it was a "nice moment".

Blood Red: Why Sunday's Community Shield really matters for Liverpool

"He (Nobes) handed me his phone," Klopp told Goal.

"I looked at the screen and it said ‘Pep’.

“100 per cent, I thought it was my Pep, Pep Lijnders! I thought ‘okay, that’s odd’. It was only when I started speaking that I realised it was the other Pep!

“There was just a lot of respect.

“I don’t know who called who, but Lee obviously worked with him at City. It was nice, a nice moment.

“We talked about what a great season it was, we had a few jokes. We were both obviously in a good mood!”

Klopp is set to face off against Guardiola on Sunday at Wembley as Liverpool and Man City prepare to get the new domestic season underway in the Community Shield.
