Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp agrees with Pep Guardiola on Man City boss' VAR plea

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has echoed Pep Guardiola’s calls for changes to be made with the way VAR is used.

There was more controversy surrounding the system during Manchester City’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield on Sunday, which saw the Premier League champions drift nine points off their title rivals.

Guardiola was left furious after his side had two penalty appeals turned down when the ball struck the arm of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The first occasion saw the hosts quickly capitalise, with Fabinho opening the scoring just 22 seconds later.

And, despite his side taking a big advantage in the title race with Sunday’s victory, Klopp has agreed with his title rival on the use of VAR, which has suffered a number of problems this season.

Speaking at the UEFA Coaches’ Conference in Nyon, Switzerland, Klopp said: "VAR can be improved, it can. It will never be 100 per cent accurate, everybody knows that. But there are a couple of things that are not right.

"With VAR, handball, offside, it is clear we have to keep on improving.

"There were good ideas from UEFA (about) how we can sort things from the referees, so everybody is in on it.

"There is still space for mistakes. These things are done by human beings and none of us is [sic] perfect. Nobody is asking for perfection, you just want to have the right decisions."

Klopp was in Nyon alongside some of Europe’s other top coaches, including Arsenal’s Unai Emery, Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, and PSG’s Thomas Tuchel.

As well as speaking about VAR, the Liverpool boss also spoke about his concerns with the fixture pile-up that awaits the European champions after the international break.

"The discussions on that are really important and we have to start them."
