War epic 1917 was the big winner at last night's British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) event - and one Merseyside man helped to make it happen.
Gateacre-born Lee Sandales won the award for best production design, beating off competition from the likes of Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
He is now hoping he can repeat the trick at next week's 92nd Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where he and fellow production designer Dennis Gassner are both up for an Oscar.
The job of the production designer involves decorating the sets, which in the case of 1917 was to make the scenes of World War One appear as realistic as possible.
It is not the first time Lee, 47, was nominated for a BAFTA - he was also up for one for his work on Steven Spielberg's film version of War Horse.
But while he was pipped to the post on that occasion, this time he romped home the winner - one of seven top gongs handed out to 1917, which also included Best Film, Outstanding British Film, and Best Director for Sir Sam Mendes.
Lee Sandales grew up in Gateacre and attended the local comprehensive school, before attending Roehampton University and getting his first job
As his career progressed he has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest Hollywood stars.
Proud mum Audrey said: "We haven't slept all night because the mobile and landline has never stopped ringing.
"We're speechless and so proud of him. The sets are so realistic."
