Liverpool man suspected of 'large scale' cocaine importation to appear in court

A Liverpool man is set to enter a plea over a large-scale drugs supply operation that was busted at the Channel Tunnel.

Christopher Mealey was arrested following the police swoop in Cheriton, Folkestone, Kent, where the British terminal for the Channel Tunnel is located.

It is alleged the 44-year-old was attempting to leave the UK, heading for Spain, when he was arrested in June last year.

Cash totalling £19,000 was also discovered in a vehicle as part of an investigation by the National Crime Agency(NCA), the UK's leading law enforcement team.

Now, it has emerged how Mealey is set to enter a plea on whether he was concerned in the fraudulent evasion of prohibition on the importation of Class A drug, namely cocaine.

If he denies the charge, Mealey is set to stand trial in October at Winchester Crown Court, along with his co-accused.

The suspect was previously said to be of no fixed abode, but court records now state he is of Upper Park Street in Toxteth.

Mealey was released on bail after his last court appearance.

Four other men were probed in connection with the same incident, and were later charged by detectives.

They are Benn Bath, 33, of Bishops Lane, Robertsbridge, East Sussex, Milos Bigovic, 29, of Nemanga, Pozarevac, Serbia, Paul Patrick Farrell, 41, of Clinton Avenue, Manchester, and Joshua Paige, 28, of Harrison Drive, Rochester, Kent.

All five men were charged with being concerned in the fraudulent evasion of prohibition on the importation of Class A drug.

Bigovic has admitted that count and also admitted possessing a controlled drug of Class A, while Farrell is also accused of breaching a Serious Crime Prevention Order.

The trial later this autumn is expected to last four weeks.
