Liverpool make training ground decision after COVID outbreak as players return

Liverpool will re-open the AXA Training Centre at Kirkby today as they ramp up preparations for Sunday's FA Cup third round tie with Shrewsbury.

The club on Wednesday took the decision in conjunction with Public Health authorities to shut the training ground following a COVID outbreak after a significant number of players and coaching staff tested positive for coronavirus.

The Reds had been forced to cancel their 4pm training session on Tuesday before a request was lodged with the EFL to postpone Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final tie with Arsenal, which was granted the following day.

Now the available players and coaching staff will return to training this afternoon as Liverpool resume work ahead of the visit of League One side Shrewsbury on Sunday.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and assistant manager Pep Lijnders will not be present with both continuing to isolate after positive coronavirus tests.

The session will be instead by helmed by Peter Krawietz, with the assistant manager also on media duties for the pre-match conference on Saturday.

Fitness permitting, Liverpool could conceivably call upon at least six senior players on Sunday in Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Curtis Jones, Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip, with all having returned from isolation periods after testing positive for coronavirus.

The Academy section of the Kirkby complex has remained unaffected with the younger players, some of whom could be involved on Sunday, continuing to train despite Friday's FA Youth Cup tie against Burnley being postponed.
