Liverpool make statement as Jurgen Klopp hits out at critics after Everton win

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool's remarkable Merseyside derby victory underlines what is required to be a player and a supporter of the European and world champions.

And the Reds boss couldn't resist aiming a dig at those who criticised his much-changed FA Cup line-up.

A team packed with fringe players and youngsters secured a famous 1-0 triumph over Everton in their third round tie at Anfield on Sunday.

Klopp made nine alterations from the side that beat Sheffield United in the Premier League on Thursday, and within nine minutes had seen James Milner, skipper for the afternoon, limp off with a muscle complaint.

Liverpool, though, fed off a raucous Anfield crowd with 18-year-old midfielder Curtis Jones scoring the only goal with a brilliant curling effort.

And Klopp believes the performance of his players, and the youngsters in particular, demonstrate the values of the club.

“I absolutely enjoyed every second of the game. It was like the Arsenal game (in the Carabao Cup) I enjoyed it so much.

“It's a very important message. If you want to be a Liverpool player you have to respect the principles of this club.

"We cannot always play the best football in the world, but we can fight like nobody else, and as long as we use our principles then we will be a difficult opponent to play against.

“It's pretty much the same for our crowd. If you want to be a Liverpool supporter you don't always have to have your best game but you can fight with all you have, which means you can shout as loud as you can.

“That's exactly what we have to do if we want something at the end of the season.”

Klopp added: “It was 100% an exceptional atmosphere. But if this game didn't have an exceptional atmosphere tonight, I would have had something to say.

“We never take it for granted. I would love to see a few people and ask them what they thought about the line-up, and all these bad things about me and the FA Cup and no respect.”
