Liverpool make Newcastle United captain's bizarre comments look foolish after dramatic win

Jamaal Lascelles' comments came back to bite him as Liverpool secured a dramatic late win at St James' Park on Saturday night.

The Newcastle captain said he believed his side would "out-work" the Reds because their "fitness" should be better on the night.

However, Jurgen Klopp's men had other ideas as they fought tirelessly hard throughout the game before finding the winning goal just four minutes from time to come back to Merseyside with all three points and an breathless 3-2 win.

How the stunned national media reported on Liverpool's dramatic late win over Newcastle

“I do fancy us tonight. Liverpool might be quite tired so it’s important we get after them from the start," Lascelles wrote.

"We have to out-work them because our fitness should hold up and be better than theirs on the night."

That win saw Liverpool move two points clear of Manchester City at the head of the Premier League table.

The Reds have one final game to go at Anfield against Wolves while Pep Guardiola's side host Leicester on Monday night before facing Brighton on the final day of the season.
