Liverpool make £44million in transfer window after selling two youngsters on deadline day

Liverpool made £44million in the summer transfer window after selling Ryan Kent and Bobby Duncan on deadline day.

Kent’s £7million switch to Rangers and Duncan’s £1.9million move to Fiorentina sealed a profitable window for Liverpool as they cashed in on loan fees and sales of young and fringe players.

Liverpool’s insistence that Kent and Duncan would not leave on loan paid off as Rangers and Fiorentina agreed permanent cash deals.

Kent, 22, has returned to Rangers to play under Steven Gerrard after enjoying a successful loan spell at Ibrox last season when he scored six goals and made nine assists to be named Scotland’s Young Player of the Year.

Liverpool agreed a £1.9million move for Duncan plus a 20 per cent sell-on clause after rejecting Fiorentina’s loan offer with a view to a permanent move next summer.

The Reds have made a healthy profit on Duncan and the youth striker, who is Gerrard’s cousin, cost them £200,000 from Manchester City last year.

Liverpool’s most-lucrative deal was making Danny Ings’ move to Southampton permanent for £20million and they also received a loan fee for Harry Wilson.

Jurgen Klopp blocked a loan move for Dejan Lovren and Roma, AC Milan, Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen wanted the Croatia centre-half for the rest of the season, but the Reds boss did not want to leave himself short.

The European champions somewhat surprisingly did not splash the cash on strengthening the squad, choosing to only spend money on 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle, who cost just £1.71m, while goalkeepers Adrian and Andy Longeran were signed for free and 16-year-old winger Harvey Elliott joined for an undisclosed fee.

It remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp decides he needs a new player or two in January, and much will surely depend on Liverpool's success both domestically and in Europe up until then.
