Fans who took to their seat early in the evening were left intrigued by the strange sight confronting them from the Anfield Road stand.
In the lower tier, the Nike logo had changed from a trademark swish to what appeared a face giving a cheeky sideways glance towards the away end.

The reason? Champions League sponsorship.
For all games in their various competitions, UEFA implore clubs to ensure they do not inadvertently promote non-UEFA sponsors.
With Nike not associated with the governing body, the Reds use red plastic coverings on seats to change the white logo so it is not immediately apparent to the casual observer and on television broadcasts.

Indeed, the logos of Standard Chartered - Liverpool's shirt sponsor but also not a Champions League partner - were altered in a similar manner in the lower tier of the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand.
Under the ruling, Liverpool have been making such temporary changes inside Anfield for several years.
However, rarely has it been so obvious as on Wednesday - and, in the case of the treatment of the Nike logo, quite so amusing.
