Liverpool 'made contact' with Sokratis before he decided next move after Arsenal decision

Sokratis Papastathopoulos was contacted by Liverpool following his release from Arsenal.

That's according to the Athletic as the Reds continue to be linked with defensive reinforcements after losing both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term knee injuries in the first half of the season.

Speaking after his side's surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Burnley last Thursday, Jurgen Klopp admitted he's been denied the chance to sign a central defender this month.

"I am not a five-year-old kid any more and if I don’t get what I want I start crying," he declared. "Most of the time in my life I didn’t get what I wanted, so pretty much used to that.

"We talk about a centre-half, and yes, it would help 100%.

"We discuss the situation pretty much on a daily basis, and I make recommendations.

"But I cannot spend the money. I don’t make these decisions. There are people who are responsible for the whole thing, and I cannot make their decisions."

Any deal taking Sokratis to Liverpool wouldn't have cost the Reds a single penny as the 32-year-old was released from his Arsenal contract last Wednesday.

And it would appear that was when the centre-back was contacted by the defending Premier League champions.

However, the aforementioned report states that the conversation is not thought to have progressed past seeing what his situation was as Liverpool 'made contact' with Sokratis.

Sokratis played under Klopp for two years at Borussia Dortmund and the pair formed a strong relationship, but they will not be reunited at Anfield.

In fact, Sokratis looks set to join Olympiacos on a free transfer.

Upon leaving Arsenal, the defender had an emotional message to those who have helped him along the way in London.

"One of the most enjoyable times in my career ended today," the centre-back wrote on his social media pages. "It has been an honour to wear the Arsenal shirt and I want to thank all the coaches, team-mates, staff and fans around the world for the love and respect they have given me.

"I gave everything for Arsenal and Arsenal also gave me a lot. I wish you all the best health and success always.

"Thank you."
