Liverpool Mad Friday 2019 is possibly the calmest ever

Mad Friday, the last Friday before Christmas, arrived in Liverpool tonight - or did it?

With a lot of people having finished work for Christmas , many were expected to make their way to the nearest pub or bar in the city centre.

The Friday before Christmas has been known as Mad Friday for several years now, as it’s said to be the most popular night for festive drinkers and one of the busiest for emergency services.

North West Ambulance Service tweeted: "As many are finishing for the Christmas break, we’re gearing up for one of our busiest nights."

Bars in Mathew Street and Concert Square were a little busy, and Seel Street, Berry Street and surrounding areas were still a magnet for some festive drinkers.

Pubs on Victoria Street and Dale Street were lively, with people who had ventured out in good spirits ahead of the Christmas break.

But the night got off to a quiet start compared to previous years - perhaps because of the bad weather.

Does this mean that 'Mad Friday' is  a thing of the past?

Or maybe many are saving themselves for a big Saturday, with Everton hosting Arsenal at 12.30pm and Liverpool looking to clinch the Club World Cup when they face Flamengo in Qatar with a 5.30pm kick-off.

However, it was certainly a hugely busy day for Liverpool retailers, with the city centre and local retail parks packed out with shoppers rushing to get their last minute presents and food for Christmas.
