Liverpool losing streak ends as young goal machine seizes substitute chance

A late goal from substitute Oakley Cannonier gave Liverpool U21s a much-needed away win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday evening.

Cannonier came off the bench before finding the net in the 84th minute with the game's only goal, after Bobby Clark had seen his own effort on goal saved at Aggborough Stadium.

The result brings to a half a three-game losing streak to Barry Lewtas' young Reds, who lost Harvey Blair to an injury early in the second half.

After a bright start from the visitors, Max Woltman missed a good opportunity before Blair rattled the post with an effort inside the penalty area. Harry Birtwistle hit the side-netting before Wolves 'keeper Louie Moulden pulled off successive saves to deny Owen Beck and Blair.

With Blair unable to continue, the hosts then missed two good chances to go ahead via Owen Farmer before Beck joined teammate Blair on the physio's table, making way for Cannonier. And after Moulden kept out Clark's effort to win the match with six minutes to go it was the 18-year-old substitute who was on hand to fire home the winner.

Wolves had a golden opportunity to snatch a point at the death, when Nathan Fraser headed a freekick delivery over the bar before the final whistle was blown, to the relief of Lewtas and his young Reds.

Liverpool U21s team: Davies, Jonas, Olufunwa, Koumetio, Beck (Cannonier, 80), Corness, Stephenson, Blair (Musialowski, 56), Frauendorf, Clark, Woltman.

Substitutes not used: Hughes, Miles, O'Rourke.
