Liverpool lose top spot to Man City - but Pep Guardiola's side suffer blow in Cardiff City win

Liverpool lost top spot in the Premier League to Manchester City on Wednesday night as Pep Guardiola's side beat Cardiff City - however, the reigning champions' victory came at a cost.

First half goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane saw City claim a comfortable 2-0 victory in a game they were always expected to win against Neil Warnock's struggling side.

However, they lost Oleksandr Zinchenko to a hamstring injury after just 18 minutes as Guardiola was forced to bring on Kyle Walker in the left-back's place, having originally opted to rotate against the Bluebirds.

The 22-year-old has cemented his placed in the City defence in recent weeks following injuries to Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph, while he has lost just one of his 37 appearances for the club following his move from FC Ufa in July 2016.

Jurgen Klopp 's side now sit a point behind Manchester City with both sides having six games left to play.

Liverpool could return to the top of the table when they travel to Southampton on Friday night, with City not in Premier League action because of their FA Cup exploits this weekend.

Their remaining game hand is against local-rivals Manchester United later this month.
