Liverpool linked with son of France legend to help midfield transfer plan

Liverpool could turn to a familiar name to help reshape their struggling midfield next season.

The Reds have been named alongside Manchester United as one of several clubs interested in OGC Nice star Khephren Thuram.

That's according to 90min, who say that the 21-year-old defensive midfielder, who is the son of former France international Lilian Thuram, has been making rapid progress in Ligue 1, with his impressive performances turning heads.

But competition is likely to be stiff, with Newcastle United, Juventus, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain all claimed to be tracking his progress.

Thuram is aware of the speculation swirling around his future, but is insisting for now that his focus is purely on Nice. As quoted by 90min, he said: “I hear, but I don’t concentrate on it. I am with Nice. I am very happy where I am. I am trying to get bigger with the club. I am trying to grow up with the club. So, yeah, obviously I hear it [the interest] but it’s not the most important. The most important is to do good with the team and be happy where I am.”

According to FootballTransfers, Liverpool have already contacted Thuram's representatives about a possible move to Anfield, although United have now entered the fray, making the task more difficult.

Jurgen Klopp will need to make multiple additions to his midfield before the start of next season with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all out of contract in a matter of months. It remains to be seen whether any of those deals are extended.

The Anfield boss will also need to consider whether he wants to try and cash in on any of his other midfield options currently on longer deals in order to raise funds for new recruits.

Since joining Nice from Monaco in 2019, Thuram has made 129 appearances for the French club, scoring eight goals. He could also earn his first senior international cap for France this evening when Les Bleus take on the Netherlands in their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier.
