Liverpool line-ups as Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota dropped and Ben Davies makes debut

'Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota benched'

Ian Doyle: Every game is a must-win for Liverpool says Jurgen Klopp, which is a bit of an issue for a team that hasn't won much in 2021.

And today will be doubly difficult up against Pandemic FC, sorry, Manchester United.

The bitter North West rivals clash at Old Trafford in a game that can be best described as being about to take place.

Still, only 21 days to go now. Mercifully.

So, the team selection. And given Liverpool cannot score, what more reason to do something radical?

Not in defence, though. The back five are the back five because there's not a lot of other realistic change to be made there at the moment.

Midfield can have Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner sitting in somewhat deeper roles.

The rest of the line-up is very much "do what you like, lads".

Thiago Alcantara is the advanced midfielder centrally, with Curtis Jones a bit to his left and Mohamed Salah a lot to his right.

Up top, Roberto Firmino can start on the basis that you'd assume both Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota will be fuming to be on the bench and if they don't show that when coming on as substitute, then perhaps it's just as well they wouldn't be playing.

My team (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Fabinho, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Milner; Salah, Thiago, Jones; Firmino.

'A return to 4-3-3 with the traditional front three'

Paul Gorst: So this is for Liverpool then; do or die as far as their Champions League hopes are concerned.

No Nat Phillips is a huge blow for the Reds and it means that Fabinho, reluctantly, must head back into defence for this one. It’s too big a risk to throw Ben Davies in for his Premier League debut at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian will partner Ozan Kabak with the usual incumbents at right and left-back.

In midfield then, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner are in there alongside Thiago Alcantara. Curtis Jones can perhaps offer something of the unpredictable if needed for the final 15 minutes or so.

Neither Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino have enjoyed vintage seasons but they keep their place ahead of Diogo Jota who is another who can provide some inspiration from the substitutes’ bench.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Fabinho, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Milner, Thiago; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

'Unchanged as front four go again'

Sean Bradbury : Yes, it was Newcastle. Yes, it was at home. Yes, it ended in a draw.

But the attacking formation employed by Jurgen Klopp in that game led to a host of chances for his side.

Liverpool need a run of victories now to have any hope of qualifying for the Champions League.

So I would go with a 4-2-3-1 / 4-4-2 shape again in a bold bid to open up United.

As much as Fabinho would ideally be in midfield, Thiago and Wijnaldum will have to do the job should Phillips remain unavailable.

Which means it is a rare unchanged line-up for the Reds.

My team (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Kabak, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Thiago; Salah, Firmino, Mane; Jota.

'Time for a Ben Davies debut'

Theo Squires: I'm starting Ben Davies. Sod it.

Nothing has gone right for Liverpool this season and it'll certainly be some turnaround if they sneak into the top four.

But they have looked their best when actually playing two centre-backs at centre-back so I'm going for such a revolutionary suggestion with the debutant starting alongside Ozan Kabak.

As a result, Fabinho is unleashed into midfield and free to kick whomever he wants. Last week's foul on Allan Saint-Maximin was glorious. It's just a shame there will be crowd to vilify the Brazilian if Paul Pogba or Bruno Fernandes were on the receiving end of such a challenge today.

Gini Wijnaldum is probably leaving so he drops out of midfield with James Milner captaining the side. We know how much the Yorkshire-born veteran loves facing United afterall.

And it's the tried and trusted front three in attack in the optimistic hope that Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane can find form when it matters most. At worst, Diogo Jota has repeatedly proven his worth as an impact sub.

My team: (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Davies, Robertson; Thiago, Fabinho, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
