Liverpool line up for Man City confirmed as Jurgen Klopp makes big call in defence

Joe Gomez has been preferred as the centre-back partner to Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool named a strong starting line-up for the Community Shield.

Jurgen Klopp has selected an XI for the Wembley showdown against Manchester City this afternoon (kick-off 3pm) all of whom appeared in the Champions League final in June.

Gomez has been given the nod ahead of Joel Matip, who joins Dejan Lovren on the bench.

Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino only returned to training on Monday but are also named in the starting line-up.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are the full-backs with the midfield consisting of skipper Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum.

Firmino will lead the attack with Salah on the right and Divock Origi on the left.

There is intrigue among the substitutes where, despite James Milner missing out as a precaution due to a tight muscle, there is no room for youngsters Harry Wilson or Rhian Brewster.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Origi.

Subs: Mignolet, Lovren, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Shaqiri, Matip.

MAN CITY: Bravo, Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Zinchenko, Rodri, Silva (C), De Bruyne, Sane, Bernardo, Sterling.

Subs: Ederson, Gundogan, Jesus, Aguero, Angelino, Foden, E Garcia.
