Xabi Alonso has signed a one-year contract extension with Real Sociedad.
The former world-class Liverpool midfielder turned down the reported interest from Borussia Monchengladbach to remain in his position in the Basque country with La Real’s ‘B Team’.
Reports in Germany claimed Alonso had agreed terms with Monchengladbach after manager Marco Rose confirmed he'd be moving to Borussia Dortmund this summer.
However, the 39-year-old has signed a new deal which runs out in the summer of 2022.
"I'm very happy with how things are going," said Alonso. "I have had great communication with the club and I want to keep growing and helping with this project.
"These have been two very enriching years for me for me and the club. We still have higher aspirations and a lot in front of us to fight for.
"We have huge ambitions."
Alonso arrived at Anfield from Sociedad in 2004, making more than 210 appearances for the Reds and winning the Champions League and Super Cup in 2005 while also claiming the FA Cup in 2006 before departing for Real Madrid.
He then spent the final three years of his playing career in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich before moving back to Madrid to coach a youth side and then returning to his boyhood club to further his coaching career.
Alonso led La Real’s second string to a fifth place finish in Spain’s Segunda Division B Group 2 in 2019/2020 - one of the sub-divisions in Spain's third tier.
They currently top that league this term, after a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao B on Sunday.
