Liverpool legend would be tempted to play with positive coronavirus test

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has raised concerns over footballers ignoring positive coronavirus tests, admitting that he would be tempted to play on, even if he’d been diagnosed with having COVID-19.

Following German top flight football’s resumption of play over the weekend, the Premier League are meeting on Monday to discuss their plans for ‘Project Restart’ ahead of a potential return to action next month.

Games would have to be played using a number of new safety guidelines though and all players are set to be rigorously screened to ensure they are not carrying the virus.

However, former Reds captain Souness, who later returned to Anfield as manager, has suggested there may be a potential problem with positive tests, should individuals show no symptoms whatsoever.

The Daily Mail quote him as telling Sky Sports Football Show: “If I test positive and a manager is pushing me to play, yeah I’d possibly go for it.

“You might call me irresponsible but if I was a player now, I’d be desperate to get back playing.

“Footballers have a social responsibility, but on the other side of it, football can do so much good.

“To answer your question, I think I could be persuaded to play if I felt fine and I tested positive, but that’s just me.”
