Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard wins Scottish Premiership title with Rangers

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has taken Rangers to their first league title since 2011 after they were mathematically confirmed as Scottish Premiership winners for the 2020/21 season.

Rangers beat St Mirren 3-0 on Saturday through goals from former Liverpool man Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi.

And the Ibrox outfit knew once they had done that, Celtic only needed to drop points away at Dundee United to seal the inevitable.

Celtic could only muster a 0-0 draw in that game this afternoon, meaning Rangers have now won the league. Had Celtic beaten Dundee United, then the title could have been won in the Glasgow derby which takes place next weekend.

Rangers would have needed to take one point from their final six games of the season to confirm their league victory, so a draw at Celtic Park would have seen Gerrard's men confirm the title there.

Now, though, they can head into that game as champions, having stopped Celtic from winning 10 league titles on the bounce.

Gerrard has now been in charge at Rangers for three seasons. His side finished 13 points behind Celtic in the standings last season, but headed into this weekend 18 points clear at the top.

"For me it's about becoming champions as quick as we can in any way we can do that," Gerrard said this week.

"The important thing as a group is to just keeping winning football matches and it will happen when it happens.

"I totally respect that some fans might want to win it this way or that way - but I don't think anyone will complain when we get this over the line.

"The important thing is to get that trophy back, get 55, knock all the 54s off the walls - that's the main thing for me, adding to the wonderful history of this club.

"If it happens on Sunday in April or May, I don't care so long as it happens."
