Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will be Rangers boss for "years to come" says England hero

England legend Terry Butcher admits he is astonished at criticism of Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard and reckons the Liverpool legend will be Ibrox boss for years to come.

The former Rangers captain has been impressed with the job Gerrard has done in his first job in management and "can't believe" small sections of the Gers' fanbase who have lost patience with the manager.

The Ibrox club look set to end the season without silverware after being dumped out of both cups by Aberdeen and sitting 10 points behind fierce rivals Celtiv in the league with just eight games to play.

A handful of Rangers fans have even said it is time for a change of boss.

But Butcher reckons those suggestions are ludicrous.

"I can't believe it," Butcher told talkSPORT. "I think he has done a very, very good job. It was always going to be a difficult job, their in a transitional period still because of the money and trying to play catch up with Celtic.

"But he has done pretty well and I suppose what the stick will be about is that he is not going to win a trophy this season - or possibly not win a trophy anyway - but Rangers haven't won trophies for ages, only the Championship title.

"So you look at that. You are always going to take time to try and get near Celtic and he has started those steps this season.

"Those steps have been very big steps so he is a long way down that road.

"I'm astonished, I can't believe it and I don't think that will ever happen (the sack) and I think he's there for a long time to come."
