Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard told which Premier League club would be 'huge step'

Former Newcastle United defender Ryan Taylor believes the club should make an approach to Rangers for their manager Steven Gerrard.

The Magpies have been through a spell of seismic change in recent weeks following the takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The new owners made the unsurprising decision to part ways with Steve Bruce as manager, with the former defender having presided over an unpopular spell in charge of the team.

Paulo Fonseca, the former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk manager, is now the favourite to take over the position at St James' Park. However, Gerrard is one of a number of other candidates who have been linked with the job.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Newcastle favourite Taylor said the club should do what they can to prise Gerrard away from Glasgow.

"Hundred per cent stick with an English manager," he said. "Someone who knows the Premier League, knows players and someone with a big name," he said.

"I would love to see someone like Steven Gerrard in charge of Newcastle. It's so passionate up there and coming from this city (Liverpool) he will know what passion is all about.

"He plays football the right way, knows who good players are and I think he's done an unbelievable job Rangers. If he was linked with the club and the club were interested, then obviously it's such a huge step for him with what they have planned for the future"

Gerrard has helped re-establish Rangers as a force in Scottish football and steered them to their 55th domestic title last season, ending Celtic's stranglehold on the competition.

While Newcastle's next manager will have access to significant funds further down the line, the team is in desperate need of some short-term antidotes. They are down in 19th in the Premier League, with no wins from their first nine games.
