Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard reveals message from Diego Maradona

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has opened up on the six players that made him fall in love with football - and revealed a message from Diego Maradona.

With the season currently on hold due to the coronavirus, figures within football, both players and managers, have been looking for things to do to help them pass the time.

For Gerrard, who is currently waiting to see what the future holds for the remainder of the Scottish Premiership season, with his Rangers side currently lying in second-place, he revealed his six players that made him fall in love with football in an Instagram post just a few days ago.

The former Reds skipper, who enjoyed an array of success stories during his Anfield career, named former Liverpool duo Ian Rush and John Barnes amongst his six choices, as well as Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Zinedine Zidane and Maradona.

Appearing on Sky Sports' 'The Football Show' on Thursday morning, Gerrard elaborated further on his selections, admitting that there were a couple of fellow former Liverpool players that he could have also included.

"Rush and Barnes were my two heroes," Gerrard told Sky Sports. "I think this challenge needed to be stretched to ten. Six wasn't enough.

"I think from an international point of view it was always Gary Lineker who scored all the goals that made you jump off the couch.

"Gazza [Gascoigne], probably the best English footballer of all time. My two Liverpool ones were Rush and Barnes but I would have liked to have Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp from my younger days.

"We need to stretch it to ten but I was really happy with the six I picked."

Following on from his decision to include Argentina legend Maradona in his selection, Gerrard revealed that he received a personal message from the World Cup winner on Wednesday.

"I actually had a message yesterday and nearly passed out," confessed Gerrard.

"Diego Maradona had private messaged me on Instagram. That made my day, and I was absolutely delighted to get a reply from him.

"Well, he's probably after my job!"
