Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard responds to Newcastle United manager reports as Rafa Benitez replacement search continues

Steven Gerrard has responded to suggestions that he has rejected the chance to become the next manager of Newcastle United.

The Liverpool legend has established himself after a season managing Rangers in the Scottish Premiership and Chronicle Live. report that Gerrard is on Newcastle's shortlist for the vacant managerial role.

It was claimed that Gerrard had rejected the chance to take from Rafa Benitez with the story suggesting that Rangers were unhappy with the approach.

However has now insisted that there was nothing in the reports with no offer made by Newcastle.

Asked if Newcastle had been in touch, the former Liverpool man quipped: "Fake news. Not that I’m aware of."

Gerrard would face some stinging criticism from Rangers fans if he decided to talk to Newcastle about the job.

But the Toon's search for Benitez's successor goes on with less than a month of the transfer window remaining.

Gerrard also offered an update on Rangers' interest in a potential loan deal for Liverpool's Ryan Kent.

Speaking after watching his side beat Oxford 5-0, the Rangers boss conceded that a potential resolution to the situation was Liverpool's decision.

Gerrard said: "The only way we’ll have a conversation is if Liverpool phone and say he’s available to go on loan.

“I would be repeating myself if I said that we want him. I’ve made that pretty clear. But that situation is in Liverpool’s hands at the moment.”
